Holguín
- international airport
Cubas most earstern international airport is located near Holguín.
Several european airlines go to Holguín. Most tourist leave
the airport in the direction of Guadalavaca, which is a well-known
hotel area north of Holguín. Some of them go to Santiago
de Cuba, where are a few hotels and resorts. For those who don't
have an organized transport it's the best way to take a taxi from
the airport even if you want to go a long distance. We took a taxi
from the airport to Baracoa (about 170 miles). The driver charged
100 U$. To go this distance with another kind of transport would
last at least 2 days.
If you are too tired
to travel further the same day, you can spend a night in one of Holguíns
hotels.
North of Holguín
there is a small town called Gibara. A lady we met in Baracoa told us,
that this is a very nice area similar to Baracoa. She also gave us the
address of a casa particulares (private room) in Gibara.
